Pendleton Design System
In our Design Systems class we were assigned a part of Cincinnati to research and ultimately design a system that would benefit that particular area. Pendleton is a beautiful and historic small neighborhood in the heart of downtown Cincinnati. Myself and my groupmates immediately fell in love with the beautiful brick buildings and ideal location. Upon talking to many of the residents there we were made aware of the fact that many of the people living in Pendleton felt that it was not completely enteraining or safe for young children who want to play outside. My group agreed that our best contribution would be for the kids of Pendleton.
Pendleton Map + Landmarks
Pendleton being such a small neighborhood, it was pretty easy for us to select five different locations that have qualities and events suitable for children and families. We chose the Cincinnati Public Library, Spring Street Park, the Pendleton Art Center, Ziegler Park, and Rothenberg Academy. From there, we divided each of these spaces up on the map to mark each landmark's territory so that when you're in that area, you can easily be guided to that landmark. Each area is branded with a different color and shape pattern to make them distinguishable to children. The inspiration for the whimsical map and patterns came from the "Pendleton Mapped" mural, shown above.
Kiosks
For each of the selected landmarks, we designed interactive kiosks to be placed in the most accessible location near that given landmark. These kiosks quickly became the center of our designed system. On these kiosks, visitors could view information and history of that specific location, a schedule of events, a map to the other Pendleton locations and their corresponding events, community highlights, and fun, interactive games for young children such as tic-tac-toe. Each of the kiosks is designed to be eye-catching and kid-friendly, each is branded for it's location.
Pendleton Website
A subsequent website was designed to accompany this kiosk system for parents at home to check schedules and activities from the comfort of their own homes.
Environmental Graphics
In order to confirm each of the landmarked territories and help guide the user to his or her desired destination, we designed street signage such as arrows and patterned graphics to be used around the neighborhood.
